Ginger -
Zingiberaceae
Most ornamental gingers are quite tall and
graceful with their arching sturdy stems filled with wide sword shaped
leaves, while others are quite short and ground hugging. They are all
beautiful and offer a definite
tropical look to any place lucky enough to be graced with their presence. There are many different types of gingers with various forms
of bloom. Some are bold, showing off their ample bloom at
the end of each sky reaching stalk, while others are shy, keeping their blooms close at
hand at the base of the plant. Nearly all gingers have beautiful
foliage which makes them attractive even when they are not in flower.
Most gingers are not hardy plants, so they will thrive in the ground year round in
warm parts of the country, but must be protected where there are cold
winters. In cold climates, the rhizomes must be dug up and kept
in a cool dark dry place away from the freezing temperatures until spring
when they can be planted in your garden once again.
